When your health is not up to par, everything else can be thrown off. That is why one of the best investment you can make is in YOU. However, making time to incorporate a healthy lifestyle is not easy so I wanted to provide you with 3 tips that can help you meet your fitness and health goals for 2018!

1.) First and Foremost, Set a REALISTIC Fitness or Health Goal!

Maybe your goal is to lose a particular amount of weight or to incorporate a healthy snack or meal frequently into your diet. Whatever your goal may be, be sure that you take into consideration your current lifestyle. Too often people set unrealistic goals that are difficult to meet because they are not positioned to attain them.

For example, if your goal is to work out at least 5 days a week for up to an hour but you work 12-hour shifts, 7 days a week, you should probably revisit that goal with the intention of making adjustments. The alterations do not mean that you are not capable of working out, but your work schedule prohibits you from upholding your goal of working out 5 days a week. Therefore, adjusting your days to 2-3 days a week becomes more feasible and realistic for you.

Setting a realistic goal is one of the components of a SMART Goal. The purpose of a SMART is to help you determine, adjust, and navigate the changes that you would like to make.

When creating your goal be sure to ask yourself the following 5 questions:

S– Is it SPECIFIC?

M– Is it MEASURABLE?

A– Is it ATTAINABLE?

R Is it REALISTIC?

T Is it TIME-bound?

Avoid writing goals that serve no meaning to you because it is human nature for us to work hard for the things that are the most passionate to us.

2.) Utilize a Calendar or Planner

Planning the days and times of when you want to work out may seem unusual but it can actually be beneficial. If you have a busy schedule, utilizing a planner or calendar can help put in perspective how you can best manage your time in prioritizing your health.

A busy week ahead may require you to check your agenda frequently to be sure that you are able to uphold your commitment to the gym or alternative workout plan. Whereas, a less busy week gives you more freedom to spread out your workouts.

In addition, your planner can surely come in handy during the spring and summer months when many summer concerts, block parties, and community events take place. Fun filled days are usually the hardest to commit your time to the gym or a workout but a planner can surely serve as a valuable tool.

For instance, NJ PAC in Newark is infamous for hosting their Thursday summer concerts in the evening which I enjoy attending. Therefore, I make sure that I plan my workout days around Thursdays to avoid missing the fun-filled event.

Not only can you utilize a planner to workout, you can use it to plan your meals in advance. Meal prepping has become a phenomenon and it has helped many people stay on track with their food intake. Knowing what your meal will be in advance, can actually prevent you from spending additional money on eating out. Personally, I tend to spend the most money on food when I did not plan my meals throughout the day beforehand.

3.) Be Versatile With Your Workouts and Meals.

Working out should be exciting and fun. Your workout routine on Monday should pump you up for your next session during the week.

That is why I strongly encourage you to incorporate various ways to workout such as running outdoors, walking, hiking, yoga, Zumba, kickboxing and more. This also includes indoor workouts that you can do on Youtube or Pinterest.

Switching up your workouts can actually keep things amusing and motivate you to workout more.

When it comes to eating healthy, stop sticking with your basic chicken salad with balsamic vinaigrette as your daily meal. There is no better way to reach your healthy food intake goals than to switch up what you’re eating.

Healthy meals go beyond salads and green smoothies. There are numerous of resources such as Pinterest and Youtube that can help you spruce up your meals. My personal favorite is Pinterest. It is a FREE website where millions of people share information amongst one another about food, clothes, hair, beauty and so much more. You can sign up for it HERE.  You can find creative, tasty and HEALTHY food and drink recipes. The convenient thing about the site is that many of the recipes featured are easy to make. So if you are not a chef in the kitchen, do not worry, I guaranteed that whatever you choose to make will turn out to be just fine.

If you are not a fan of Pinterest or Youtube, then purchasing a healthy cookbook or downloading one online may be a great option for you.

I hope these tips kickoff your 2018 to a healthy start. Remember, when you invest in you, your future self will be happy you did so.
